Meet Prateek.

Every start line has a story. This one's from Lake to Lake — Prateek Verma, the runner we back directly, training with us every week. Here's how race day actually went, in his own words.

Last year I ran this at maybe 80–85% effort, coasting off Goa Ultra fitness. This year was different — it landed mid-way through a 766km July training block, so I went in tired on purpose. Legs started cramping on the flats after the last downhill, bad enough that I nearly seized up near the finish — two other runners held on and kept me moving. I'd targeted sub-6:30; finished in 6:40:35. First place either way, but I know exactly where those minutes went. Spartathlon's next.
Prateek Verma · from The Mirror

He took on Spartathlon next — that chapter's below.

trainwithgulia On 11 September, Bhawana Datta finished the 2026 Khardung La Challenge in 12 hours 55 minutes 26 seconds, her third finish at the race and her fastest. She ran the last 40 kilometres of it with almost no sight in her left eye. She didn’t stop, and she didn’t tell race officials until she had crossed the line. Around South Pullu, the checkpoint on the descent, she stopped to re-layer. A woman running behind her caught up. “What’s wrong with you? You’re not running straight, you’re wobbling.” Bhawana told her she couldn’t see out of her left eye. The runner guessed acute mountain sickness. Twice she took Bhawana by the arm and moved her away from the open edge of the road, toward the mountain side: “Run on this side. Run on this side.” With nothing on her left, Bhawana kept catching loose pebbles on the broken stretches, and her foot started to hurt. Her coach stayed on the phone with her almost the whole way down, asking again and again where she’d reached. With about 20 kilometres left, she stopped arguing with herself. “Enough of this DNF nonsense. Ab isme kya hi rona. Isse khatam karte hain.” Here’s what goes into her next block. Eye drops join her altitude kit, used before anything goes wrong, not after. When illness takes weeks out of a build, we protect the recovery the way she did this time and set the race target to match, instead of carrying the old number to the start line. And the training goes where this course decides the clock: long, steady climbing. The rest of the block did its job. The 35 km night runs, the patience on the climb, 17 even kilometres with one eye and a 7:26 at kilometre 71 all point to a runner with a faster day in her than the one Ladakh gave her this year. trainwithgulia If you’re an endurance athlete reading this, take it as a data point, not a verdict. A body that stops cooperating — no matter how well the mind and the training held up — happens more often than the highlight reels let on, and it happens to well-prepared athletes too. What usually separates a comeback from a closed chapter is what happens in the weeks after, not the finish line itself. Prateek’s Spartathlon record now reads: first attempt, DNF at checkpoint 25. Knowing him, it won’t be the only line he writes there.

trainwithgulia 29.4°C. Rain on top of it. Sixty-two and a half kilometres through Canacona’s hills — not the flat beach jog Goa Ultra sounds like from the name. Bhawana finished the 60K in 8:02:19, 1,415 metres of climbing along the way, holding a 7:43/km average through all of it. Thoda aur better ho sakta tha but finishing sound is more important. Humidity does something heat alone doesn’t — sweat stops cooling you the way it’s supposed to, so the body works harder for the same effort. Add that climb on top and every kilometre after the first twenty starts asking a real question. Woh sawaal ka jawab usko pehle se pata tha — mahino se yehi practice kar rahe the. Jab se main Bhawana ko train kar raha hoon, ek hi cheez baar baar dekhi hai — mehnati bahut hai. Kuch bhi ho, kaise bhi ho, workout apna zaroor karti hai — chahe early morning uthke karna pade. Abhi jab Lake2Lake aur Khardung La ki taiyari chal rahi thi, maine usse bola tha ki hills mein train karna hai — Chandigarh aake. Toh woh specially Mumbai se aayi, do din yahan daudi weekend pe, phir wapas apne Gurugram chali gayi. Sirf training ke liye! Jo bolo, jaise bolo, karti hai. Pain ho raha ho ya nahi, jitna workout diya hua hai, sab ignore karke woh karti hai. Goa mein bhi wahi dikha — humidity aur climb dono ke against! Ab agla target Khardung La hai — Ladakh ki altitude, September mein. Uske baad jo bhi aaye. Proud of this one. Bhawana, yeh mehnat ka asli matlab hai — jab koi dekh nahi raha tab bhi. #trainwithgulia #teamgulia #goaultra #ultrarunning #indianrunners

Questions

Sawaal? Seedha jawaab.

Before you say yes, you will have questions. These are the ones runners ask first. Still not sure? The free call is for exactly that.

Who is Train With Gulia for?

Runners across India (and beyond) who want to take on a bigger distance: a first 10K or marathon, a first 50K, the big Himalayan and desert ultras, or international starts like Badwater and Spartathlon. Working professionals, women, runners in their forties or coming back after a break, and runners from small towns are all welcome on this road.

Do I need to be an ultrarunner to train with Amit?

No. Amit coaches runners stepping up to their first 50K as well as experienced ultra runners. If you can dream the distance, you belong here.

How does coaching start?

Every route starts with a free call with Amit. You talk through your goal race, your week and your questions, then decide what fits. There is no pressure and no pitch.

Who actually coaches me?

Amit Gulia coaches personally on every tier. Your plan is built from your own Strava data, and Amit reviews and adjusts it himself. There is no algorithm deciding your training.

How do I reach Amit?

By WhatsApp, by comments on any workout on the platform, on scheduled calls, and by email. He is a message away.

Why does coaching cost money?

What you contribute keeps the platform, Amit's time and the systems running, so more runners can be coached well. This is not built to churn revenue. It is built to stay sustainable, keep improving, and still work as a business for Amit.

Can I get a reduced or sponsored seat?

Yes. A few sponsored or reduced seats are available. Bring it up on the free call and Amit will work it out with you.

Which races do you coach for?

Ladakh Marathon, Khardung La Challenge and Silk Route Ultra; the Great Himalayan Running Festival's Rohtang Epic, High 5 and Hell Ultra; the Malnad, Ooty and Kalimpong Ultras; White Sand Ultra, Goa Ultra and The Border; and Badwater, Spartathlon and Comrades. Pick a race in the coaching filters to see what fits.
